OFDM demodulation using virtual time reversal processing in underwater acoustic communication

چکیده
The extremely long underwater channel delay spread causes severe inter-symbol interference (ISI) for underwater acoustic communications. Passive time reversal processing (PTRP) can effectively reduce the channel time dispersion in a simple way via convolving the received packet with a time reversed probe signal. However the probe signal itself may introduce extra noise and interference (self-correlation of the probe signal). In this paper, we propose a virtual time reversal processing (VTRP) for single input single output (SISO) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems. It convolves the received packet with the reversed estimated channel, instead of the probe signal to reduce the interference. Two sparse channel estimation methods, matching pursuit (MP), and basis pursuit de-noising (BPDN), are adopted to estimate the channel impulse response (CIR). We compare the performance of VTRP with the PTRP and without any time reversal processing through MATLAB simulations and the pool experiments. The results reveal that VTRP has outstanding performance over time-invariant channels.

Demodulation of Underwater OFDM Transmissions by Time Reversal and Basis Pursuit Methods
In this paper we discuss a channel shortening approach based on passive time reversal (PTR) for underwater acoustic communication using OFDM. PTR exploits the physics of acoustic propagation to mitigate intersymbol interference in a simple and robust way, reducing the need for long OFDM symbols and prefixes. We adopt recent basis pursuit methods for identification of sparse responses from PTR c...

Underwater acoustic communication is important to a variety of scientific and commercial missions in the ocean, for example ocean exploration and monitoring. Due to hardware limitations, often limited bandwidth, for example 6-7 kHz, has been used in underwater communication systems. In addition to high spectral efficiency, large bandwidth can also lead to increased data rates. When utilizing a ...

متن کاملUnderwater Communications Using Virtual Time Reversal in a Variable Geometry Channel
Field experiments using Time-Reversal Mirror(TRM) techniques have shown that the underwater acoustic channel presents a longer stability than it was previously anticipated. Applying such techniques to underwater communications requires that, either the emitted signals are previously filtered by time-reversed replicas of the channel impulse response or that a probe-signal should be transmitted a...

The success of multicarrier modulation in the form of OFDM in radio channels illuminates a path one could take towards high-rate underwater acoustic communications, and recently there are intensive investigations on underwater OFDM. In this workshop, we would like to demonstrate two projects that have been undertaken at University of Connecticut on the implementations of an OFDM acoustic modem,...
